Pre War of Souls
Analis looks to the Master of the Tower. “I need to speak to Karnea.”
“She is currently indisposed with her mission which has taken her far from here. I doubt she will be able to speak with you, unless an avenue can be made to bring your spirits together in concert. There is a way, but you will have to contact the Caretaker of Dragonbane Tower to see if she can contact her Master.”
“Very well, you prepare the “Other Avenue”, I will contact Kalana.
Later, Clang flies over New Sea with the Master of the Conclave on his back. They fly high above the Isle of Schallsea until it is time to descend to the Barren Hills.
They hover near the Tower and Kalana is alerted to a Copper Dragon outside.
Kalana climbs to the roof and steps into the freezing air, ready for anything. She recognizes Clang as being the guardian Dragon of the Tower of Wayreth.
“Kalana, it is I Analis Faethor, Master of the Conclave. I must speak with you.”
Later, The two Wizards dine inside discussing the situation. Kalana leaves the room for long moments as she prepares to activate a item of Magic.
Kalana sends forth a call to her Master. Hours later, Karnea hears the call of her student and takes a moment to ponder the message. Scamp has returned from his scouting mission and has still not found a way out of this area. Karnea thinks for a few minutes before answering.
Two hours later, The Masters of Red and Black gather together on an astral plane, a pocket dimension, powered by the Tower of Wayreth. The Spirits of Karnea, Analis are brought together with, at Karnea’s suggestion, Kalana Hiewind, Caretaker of Dragonbane Tower.
The Master of the Conclave begins, “This is a strategy meeting for the purpose of battling this God. It has not made itself known to us. Our Magic is fading, whether this God is responsible or not has been verified by at least two sources that I trust. The Next thing I can think of is whether this God has followers and what part they might factor into all this.”
The Master of the Black Robe thinks back and says, "From what I have learned in my travels, a god needs worshipers. Without them, they lose their power and eventually fade. So this god must reveal itself soon, to gain a following and continue to survive."
"True enough, yet the question remains, what can we do?" The Master of the Conclave sighs, "How do we go against a God?"
Kalana says the first thing that comes to mind, something she thought about a long while back when this first started, "Kill their worshipers, shouldn’t that affect this God?”
“This god has no worshippers of which we know...that is the problem.” Kalana’s Master replies.
Kalana persists, “And the question is if there are no worshippers or followers of this god, then how can it have the power to do this thing?
But Karnea already knows the answer, "Precisely why IT steals the magic from us."
Kalana tries to fathom the implication, “But to do so . . . in such a quick and powerful timeframe and level of depth. There is more to this than meets the eye
“From what I have learned of past deities of long ago, the power of a god will carry on for some time without worshippers.... perhaps it was weakened before, and is trying to rebuild itself.” Karnea puts forth.
Analis mulls it over and agrees, "That would seem to make the most sense. A God, which recently lost all of its followers, and went "wandering", as it were.”
Kalana tries to place it in perspective, “An example, Karnea, you are a powerful sorceress, and the potential has always been within you, but when you first started, you could not have done the things you could do...a year ago. It took time and practice for your powers to grow. The gods may be able to do some things grander than we can, but to do it so quickly..."
But Karnea answers simply, "Time is nothing to one who is timeless, my apprentice."
"Yes, but let's not forget the difference in scope. We are talking about a God." Analis says.
But ruled by what she knows of the facts, Kalana says, "Yes, but this god can NOT be of this realm, since they were ALL taken away. Could a god have come from somewhere else, from another planet or plane, and be carrying the power of its worshippers there?"
Analis is more skeptical, "Can we say 'Yes' or 'No' with any certainty?"
Kalana considers this, "If the god is one of the ones from Krynn, would not the others have returned, or soon to return?"
Karnea has had thoughts on this very subject and when she speaks, it is quiet and reserved for she does not truly know the answer to this question. "I do not believe that the 'this plane' to which you refer is indeed the 'this plane' we are currently residing in...."
The Caretaker of Dragonbane Tower goes on the offensive, clearly having not heard her mentor, "You are one that would believe in the "balance of all things" Analis, would the others gods return if only one came back?"
Analis doesn’t take the bait, but ponders the implications of what her former Mentor just said, "What do you mean Karnea?"
The Master Necromancer collects her thoughts and puts it more clearly, "What I mean to say is, that it is possible that a deity may have removed the world itself from it's native plane, only to place it in a place if It's choosing."
The Conclave Master says "Well, THAT is certainly a troubling thought."
Karnea continues, "If that were the case, that could explain the deity's current, weakened state."
"If they are from the original pantheon, then why hide their identities? They would have no challenger against their dominion, and their previous followers would be more then happy to pick up the worship and subjugation of the whole world" The Caretaker says.
Karnea finishes the thought of her student, "If it were a lesser god from the old pantheon, would it make sense for them to disguise themselves so as not to arouse old distrusts?"
Analis follows suit, "If the followers started broadcasting the message of their God's return, I suspect that the other god's might become aware of the situation."
"Or a greater god, for that matter. Would you willingly follow Sargonnas, for instance?" Karnea asks.
Not knowing the past history between her master and the God of Dark Vengeance, Kalana asks "But we have already stated that the god might be keeping the fact that they have returned hidden from the others. Would it be so hard for them to hide the fact that they have shown themselves to us? And are we so sure that this god has NOT shown itself to its followers? Just because we haven't heard of it happening..."
Analis says, "It might. In order to receive the power of its follower's prayer, would it not have to allow that energy to be passed? If so, perhaps other followers, of other Gods, might begin to pray to their deity of choice, and then either the current God cuts off it's own energy supply, or allow the energy of the other God's to go to them, thus alerting them to this"
Having never liked the thought that her Master had other students before herself, the metaphysical debate has Kalana getting belligerent. "So what do you suggest, we get everyone to pray to the deity they had before they left us?"
Again, not taking the bait, "No, I think we have to assume the old Gods are out of this for the time being.”
Watching the exchange with a mix of amusement and some annoyance "If this deity has shrouded the world from the old gods, would it not stand to reason that any followers of those gods can no longer have their prayers heard?'
"Exactly. So no matter what any others do, pray to their gods, or call out to them, or what ever, the only thing that will get through is what this god WANTS to get thru. And since any prayers that go to this god will go DIRECTLY to them, they could have shown themselves to their worshippers already. So we are back to square one. We don't know WHERE this god is from" Kalana says.
Coming full circle and seeing the line of thinking of Kalana, Analis says, “Agreed, so it either reveals It's true identity and accepts prayer - thus risking prayers to be sent to the Others - or it remains anonymous. Either way, what we need to discover is a means for taking the battle to this God."
Kalana says, “More than we have. Since the power we have is derived from magic, and this deity is sucking that from us at a growing rate, we have no way to battle it. Unless there is a way either of you know to fight a god with swords and arrows. But…the power that is in artifacts and items enchanted by magic, that remains. How can that be used to our advantage?"
Dragonbane says, "The self styled Father of all and nothing was destroyed with a simple dagger...."
Remembering back to that Summer of Flame, Analis says "Very true, Karnea."
Analis looks at Karnea significantly, and says "I used the Stones as Focus, and even then was unable to contact any of the Brothers."
Karnea gives a grave look. "Even with a significant, personal focus...that is dire news."
Kalana will look at Analis. "What is this?"
Analis looks at Kalana a long moment, and then shrugs "You have as much at stake as the rest of us, of course." She pulls from her pouch a heavy, *Dragons Blood* red stone, and sets it on the desk between them. "That, is a piece of Lunitari which fell to the ground during the Chaos War."
"And you can use it to contact Lunitari directly?" Kalana asks incredulity.
The Master of the Conclave says, "One would certainly think so." She sighs in frustration "But, no, even a physical piece of Lunitari isn't a strong enough focus to penetrate this shield
Kalana says, "Then that locks in part of our mystery. Whoever this deity is, it is keeping us shielded from the original pantheon. Since its identity is unknowable if it is not part of the original pantheon, then we should think as if it IS part of the original pantheon. Which one of them would be the most likely to do something like this?"
Again, Karnea has thought a lot about this very subject, "Any one of the seven god of Evil, and more than a few of the gods of Neutrality. Perhaps even a god of Good, with a twisted sense of propriety. Your guess is as good as mine."
"What would be their reason for not showing at least SOME of their previous worshippers that they had returned?" Asks the Caretaker.
The Master of the Conclave says, "Just so. Takhisis on down her house. Sirrion, Zeboim, maybe.
Karnea says "My only conclusions in this matter would be that it was not one of the Brothers of Magic. And even then, if one were weakened enough, He might do this thing to us."
Kalana says, "Certainly Nuitari would have spoken to us by NOW, wouldn't he, or Lunitari to you Analis, or Solinari to one of the others of the white robes.
Analis continues, "True, though only Nuitari, or MAYBE Lunitari...But not Solinari . . .”
"I can say with a fair amount of certainty that it was not Nuitari...." Karnea flatly states.
Analis says, “So, ruling them out, along with the other obvious ones: Palidine, Chislev, Gilean, Habbakuk, Mishakal . . . ?"
Kalana says, "Are we so sure that Paladine or the others would NOT do this? Given the fact that they could create and control what they think is the perfect world, to recreate this place in their idea of order, none of the gods besides the brothers can fairly be ruled out."
The Master of the Black Order says, "Even the prayers of the former priests are no longer working, however. Would any of the other gods remove their gifts from their followers so abruptly?"
Kalana says, "If this god has shrouded the world from view of the other gods, and the prayers of the priests are not being heard, then the other gods would know nothing." We must find a way to contact the gods of the pantheon. We risks another war between them, but it is our only defense."
Ever the student of the past, Karnea says "Raistlin once believed that if he could draw Takhisis into the physical world, that he could defeat her, and he had good reason to. The last time She did enter the physical world, Huma drove her out with a Dragonlance."
Kalana asks, “So, how do we draw this god out into the physical world?"
Karnea says: "We must determine what this god wants, what this god likes, and what this god dislikes. Once it has revealed itself, we must act against it, to draw It out in the open, where It may be dealt with. Unfortunately, that may take some time. We do not know when this god will reveal itself."
Analis says "But we can't really force it to show itself, until it wants to, is that not correct?"
Kalana says, “And as we wait, our art is weakening more and more"
Analis says, "Which, for all we know, might be part of its plan."
The Master of the Black Order says, "Correct, on both counts. This god will not likely come out until it has gathered great power to itself. It may well be that It will be at the very pinnacle of It's power. But, so was Takhisis when she went against Huma. So must it be again."
Kalana says, "Are there any more of those pieces of moon? What I'm getting at is, would the barrier that is up be broken if more people than just one try to contact one of the brothers?"
Analis is quiet a moment, and then says, "As a matter of fact, there are two others with shards of the Three Brothers."
Kalana asks "And have all three of you tried to contact the brothers at the same time?"
Analis says:
"No. Not as of yet.”
"Think of it like this, if a man strikes at a door with an axe by himself, it will come down eventually, but if more than one man does it at the same time, the door will break down quite quickly." The Caretaker puts forth.
The Master of the Conclave concedes, though the idea had been thought about, the time had not presented itself until now to bring the subject up. "You DO have a point there." She looks at her former Mentor "What do you think, Karnea?"
Karnea is silent for only a moment, "If three mice gnaw at a mighty Vallenwood, what do you expect would happen, my student? It is helpful to keep in mind the immense scope of a deity. Their merest thoughts become our realities. Their slightest exertion destroys continents. In their own element, gods are well nigh unopposable. It is only in the material world where they seem to become vulnerable."
Kalana studies the Moon Rock, "This is true. I sense power radiating from that shard. Have you looked into that? It is like an enchanted item, with only so much energy inside it, or is it a source of power, generating if you will the magic that radiates from within it?"
The Master of the Tower answers, "I have indeed given over much time to studying this Stone. It is, in fact, a sort of magical generator. It creates the energy it gives off, but it can only create so much at a given time, that it IS finite if it is pushed beyond it's limits, it will burn out, and become unusable."
The Caretaker says, "What if you took that energy and transferred it into items for storage as it generated it. After awhile you would have a stockpile, to be used against this deity once it shows itself. That would solve the problem of having magic as a resource when the time came for battle. And all we have is time now. Time for this . . . god to show itself."
Karnea considers the matter, "That is something that can be studied. I'm afraid that right now I have a somewhat pressing engagement that I am attending at this very moment. However it was good in speaking with you both on this. Please do keep me informed as to the results of Kalana's idea."
Analis stands, and says "Of course, Karnea. If you happen to make any progress in your in your own endeavors, should it be of benefit to our opposition to this God.
Karnea Dragonbane is thoughtful to what she has gone through in the last months and the horde of knowledge and power that is now at her fingertips. “I will. If nothing else, I will see you at the spring Conclave."
The Caretaker says, “And I must be on my way as well. I will keep in touch with the conclave on how things fare. I found this debate and discussion to be most enlightening and extremely frustrating. Hopefully, what we have discussed here will help us against this plight. "
"Agreed. Thank you, again, Sisters, for coming." The Master of the conclave ends the conversation and the scene ends with Analis leaving the demi-plane behind.
Notes of how this could go another way.
Analis looks to the Master of the Tower. “I need to speak to Karnea.”
“She is currently indisposed with her mission which has taken her far from here. I doubt she will be able to speak with you, unless an avenue can be made to bring your spirits together in concert.
