General Zeva and the Wolverines
3-29-07
Gateway has become the base headquarters of the Wolverines based on Krynn. Commanded by one General Dugan Granitehammer.
Zeva, Rotas and their two year old child live at the centrally located Governors Keep.
Lucius and Aravis live in New Ports currently, recover after their trials with the Coven, the Gray, and Aravis’s Test of High Sorcery. Aravis has been through life and death and life again and tested to her breaking point. She has not spoken of her Test to anyone, per the law of High Sorcery.
Lucius runs the Dark Knives from New Ports to gather info in Solace, Haven and to Qualinesti to Pax Tharkus, running agents and on occasion getting a first hand look if the need warrants, but on the whole, it has been a quiet time as the boarders have been redrawn and there does not seem to be a desire of on anyone’s part to fight the Wolverines. Rog, Lucius’s ally through his travels to the Gray and back is still at his side, loyal to the end.
Dugan, life has slowed down for you during this lull in activity. True, there is a rumor of a Goblin Nation rising inside southern Qualinesti; there has been some Elven Rebellion activity inside the boarders of Qualinesti, but not much.
The Bandit King Sumval has melted into Qualinesti along with a pretty sizable Army and divvied up sections of Qualinesti for themselves, but northern Abanasinia is under your direct control is clear, no enemy activity for two long years. The Troops are trained up, the Solace Militia has been turned into a strong fighting force that you are proud of.
“So what next?” Dugan asks his Administration Assistant.
“Uh, yes sir.” She looks down his itinerary, “Tomorrow you are traveling to Solace for Lunch with the Mayor of Solace, Palin Majere.”
“Right, that’s all Abby girl, get on home to that wee-one, see you in the morning.” Down for the day, before three too, not like the bad old days.
The Next Day,
The General walks into the courtyard after breakfast to find the traveling party getting ready for the ride north. Three War Wagons will accompany 3 Three Squads on horseback. Lord Rotas and Empress Zeva comes down the steps from their keep, followed by Berra, carrying the princess, followed by chosen handmaidens. All exchange pleasantries and the handmaidens and Berra and the princess enter one of the War Wagons, especially modeled for Royal connivance.
Zeva, Dugan and Rotas all mount their riding horses and make sure all is ready and departs for the half day journey north to Solace.
Solace,
The company rides down the central road, past Sadtown, and into Solace proper. The party dismounts at the stable-house at the base of the Inn and all ascend the circling ramp around the giant vallenwood.
A time later, you finally get to the top to meet Palin, his sister Laura, and his Sheriff, Gerard uth Monder.
Introductions are made all around and it is respectful between you all.
You are shown in and are directed to a large round table. You all take your seats and drinks are brought out.
Everyone settles in,
Palin stands and offers a toast, “To the heroes of the War of Souls, I welcome you here in the name of peace and prosperity to you all.”
Food to brought forth, and everyone digs in.
Gerard relates to Dugan of the status of the Solace Militia, and the Vallenwood Guards, the police force of Solace proper.
Palin stands after a while and walks to Zeva and hands her an envelope of impeccable make and composition. She opens it and reads:
Empress Zeva de Jankiar,
Please allow me to introduce myself, I am Mercadior Redic VI, Emperor of Ergoth. I have read reports of your deployment for quite some time and am thoroughly convinced of your greatness. I understand quite that you are married my lady, and do bid you and your husband and your retinue as you please.
I welcome you to come and allow me to play host to an incredible Woman General Queen, and her Wolverines.
Signed,
Mercadior Redic VI
Emperor of Ergoth
When you are done, Palin says,
“The Ambassador of Ergoth is coming to Schallsea, The Ambassador would like to meet your Representive this weekend at Schallsea. I was contacted a couple of days ago, and I wanted to pass this on to you for you to decide with it as you will.”
Ambassador Duval
By the DM
The week passes quickly for you Dugan. You are dreading this trip. You meet with Ambassador Duval, of Ke'un. He is dressed exoticly, as are all his people, (except those in the Wolverines,) he is in his late fifties and has a shaved head, but wears a gray beard.
He is knowledgeable in Krynnish lore and politics having spent fifteen years at the Library of Palanthas. He served as an Ambassador of his home world as according to the customs of his world, he was born to be a talker, a Ambassador, You guess it makes him qualified. You have known of him back on Soreel, decent enough guy.
You meet and talk over a few things; he gives you a copy of what he copied from the Library.
“Do you have any questions General?”
By Adam
"Call me a warmongering old Dwarf if you must, but what kind of military force does this Ergothian Empire have?I'm not doubting your ability to negotiate, but sometimes the other side is determined not to listen. If things get sour between Ergoth and Soreel, I need to know what we're facing."
“I understand General, they do have an impressive force of one hundred and fifty thousand strong troops. Most of them are footmen Infantry, but their Riders have considerable skills led by Praetor Lord Uthred Ker-Kanvovas.”
“I must say, I do not know what the Empress is planning with Ergoth, I think she sees a like-minded Empire, similar to the Imperial Homeworld.”
“If we really wanted to destroy Ergoth, I imagine the forces of Soreel and Krynn could defeat her if I understand your question my old friend. If anything, I believe the Empress is interested in an Alliance with Ergoth, to what ends, I can only speculate.”
“They have vast lands where we could stretch out the Wolverine’s legs for training purposes perhaps?”
By Adam
Dougan gives a hearty laugh. "No, no...I've got plenty of trouble with goblins to my south to go wanting to stir up more to my northwest. Whatever Her Majesty has planned, I'm sure we'll find out in due time."
War Room at Gateway,
Zeva meets with:
General Dougan
Ambassador Duval
General Ellis of 1st Armored
Chief Engineer Trevel
Major General Kelor of the 1st Airforce
Col. Joben Manus J-3 (Chief Operations Planning Officer)
Lt. Col. Romulo Cordovillo J-2 (Chief Intelligence Officer)
Lt. General Vannya Adrianzen J-2 of the Greysword's Staff
Chief War Wizard Granov of the 2nd Army
Special Forces Brigider General Chance Trotta C.O. ISF
“To my loyal officers, you are the best. This was a test to our mettle as Champions of the Empire, we won.”
“I am returning to Soreel, for Five Years. If the Empire is well, then I will return in five years, if it is not, then understand that one day you may be recalled and activated at my back to face whatever foe against us.”
“I am proud to have served beside each and every one of you. I give you the choice of where you want to serve, I have given all of you this same question, Some of you left to go home, finally, after twenty years here. It is a worthy world here, but we are all Soreelians, we all have homes in our homesphere, but I want to create a legacy here as well. I have scouts out as we speak, looking at a minor Continent in the north western Sea. It is populated, but not overly so, There is Room for us to eke out a Beachhead and start a Base Camp and Carve out our Enclave on Krynn.”
“We are going to continue to train up the Army of Abanasinia, and then tactically remove ourselves from the Solace Vale region. It is no longer up to us to shield them from whatever comes. And whatever about the elves. I know the Elves are rebelling in Qualinesti, We will meet with them and see what their situation is, but we are not going to retake the Forrest for them. I am more concerned about Minotaurs in the Eastern part of the World.
We are going to start playing by our rules; we will decide where we need to push our influence and who we need to crush.”
“I like Ergoth, I like their History and what they were headed for, and what they was going to be, but a long series of Emperors dragged the Empire into the ground, sort of like what happened at home. There are parallels that make our Empires unique.”
I intend to cede a Fiefdom on Soreel to Ergoth, in return I seek a fiefdom in Ergoth to build a bond of friendship that will build a future on this world.
General Dougan will Marshal the entirety of Imperial presence on Krynn as my Governor General.
To my Officers, this man now leads all of you in my Imperial name.”
What the Fuck did she just say?
By Adam
Dougan bows low before his Sovereign. "Thank you, Majesty. All that you have said shall be done."
By the DM
Very well, Major Hayes of my Staff will collect Troop Reports from all Company Commanders on troop situations, special accommodations to be given out, if there are any special cases that a man needs to come back to Soreel, A fresh solider come back to make the balance, I am not going to bar anyone from going home, that is except a couple of special units.
Elements from the 1st Armored Division
111th War wagon Brigade
112th Heavy Shock Cavalry
113th War wagon Brigade
These troops fought and improvised beautifully during the Dragon Raids on Gateway and Wolfgaard I understand, the special elements that are staying behind are getting promoted and starting training new units to fight any future anti Dragon Warfare.
In five years they return home, promoted again, and go to teach at a new Anti/ Air/ Dragon School in Marika.
There are a few of these special cases that is going to be worked out over the next couple of Months. I want to get going out of here within two months. Dismissed. Next Staff meeting is in five days, I want to see progress people.”
“Dougan, walk with me.” She leads the Governor General down the passageway and up several steps to the viewing room above the Fortress. Made of Glassteel, it is a 360° degree view of the Sentinel Mountain peaks to the Solace Peaks, to the Kharolis Mountains on the South. Quite clearly you can make out Prayer’s Eye Peak, beyond that is Twin Peaks, where a fallen enemy once had his lair, and far Eastwall Mountains near Merwellyn.
“So what do you think? Sorry to spring it on you, just, it’s been my head for a little while now.”
Schallsea
Meeting with the Ambassador of Ergoth, Caminol Nyrin
Reports come in and are disseminated by the intel. boys and girls, and packaged up nice and neat and given to freshly minted Governor General and his superior, the Greysword.
They are in the War Room, right after a shower, and breakfast and coffee.
The Krynnish expeditions were sent out sometime before the war in Solace Vale.
They have found Taladas, reports supremely savage.
Tarnak, home of the Brutes that served Ariken of the Dark Knights. highly savage.
A World beyond that is fantastical called Kalonar. They have some Spelljammer Tech.
An Exotic land called Valika
An oriental land called Royodo.
A Minotaur land called Adlatum
Next is a report from Mt. Nevermind.
Which makes Zeva look up at her friend and says “I also want you to stop by Nevermind before you go to the new land. I know, I keep doing this to you, but this report says if these guys were directed, they could be building some things at work. They used to have the only Spelljamming Hub of all of Ansalon at one time. We need them if we are going to ever have to take on the Minotaurs.”
“Have you read the Sphere report?”
“This is a dangerous, but huge sphere where Krynn is now.”
“I want to set up a trade union with Ergoth, and we are not going to be too far from Adlatum, so we are going to have to keep an eye on them Minotaurs they got over there.”
“Later today I want to take you over to meet Drex. A Half-Elf from the Free Isles back home. I put him in charge of my Spynet in Solamnia fifteen years go and I’m bringing him home to handle things for you and Lucius. Who by the way is going to be running my land in Ergoth. It will be good for him. He isn’t exiled there, but I have outlined his duties,
By Adam
"Your Majesty, I am deeply honored to be chosen for this task. The Imperial presence on Krynn will grow and prosper in the years to come. But if I may be so bold, I feel that it would be folly to completely abandon Ansalon militarily. Perhaps we may be permitted to retain our naval and administrative presence in New Ports. It is not that I don't trust my colleagues in the intelligence service, it's only that as you well know, a soldier sees things from a different perspective than a spy. I would not presume to disagree with you on this matter if I did not think it important."
Dialogue
By the DM
“This I understand General, and yes, though I have been thinking of the changes for quite sometime, I do want you input on the matter at hand. I just have been going back and forth about dividing forces, it is something I did not think you would agree to. I think keeping New Ports defended as well as Gateway are smart ideas, tell me, what do you think?”
Blood
By Adam
"Majesty, we fought and bled to secure this land. I think it would be against our strategic interest to withdraw completely. Gateway was purpose-built to serve as an Army Group-sized headquarters, and it cost considerable treasure to do. It would be like throwing out Your Majesty's gold to leave it.
The same is true of New Ports. The wharves and shipyard were quite expensive to construct, as was the road to Solace. There is also the matter of the two hulls currently under construction in the yard. They are already financed, and scrapping them would be a waste of resources.
We can manage a reduced presence in Abanasinia, but total withdrawl would be a mistake."
Changes
By the DM
“I truly do not disagree with you. You decide on the deployment levels my friend, you have handled command with due diligence of a master tactician. I have every confidence in you General.”
The meeting concludes after they drink a few more beers and they depart the war room and conclude their night.
Months pass. The Imperial visit to Ergoth goes extremely well. You are impressed by the Elite Blackguard and the legions of Cavaliers, though, they are not Wolverines.
What impresses the general is the history of this nation started with a sword. It became a great empire, but it is a mere shadow of what it once was.
They passed along some armament improvements (I will detail them soon, they are awesome). The Wolverine Delegation stays in the Imperial Nation for a Week. They visit the Castle and land from the Grant. They visit Lancton, where the Bard College stands, along with the Imperial University, which is comparable to what you remember seeing in Marika.
In all, it was a decent, if a little dull. You never got a bad gut feeling, and that’s a plus.
The Delegation returns to Gateway and the months pass
There is a large going away party for Zeva and Rotas and some of the Troops. New Troops have arrived and are up in Orbit around Krynn awaiting orders.
They leave the next day.
