Following the Cataclysm, the steel coin became the standard monetary unit throughout Krynn. Steel is scarce due to the excesses of the previous Age of Might, and is dearly needed to create tools and weapons. Gold, because it had no practical value in the struggling post-Cataclysm civilizations, became nearly worthless except for ornamentation.
